How to make a persistence file USB flash drive
Good to know that a nice distro called Antix
makes it easy have a persistence USB flash drive. Antix is straight forward and easy, no write up file or stuff like that. Just choose and
install. How easy it is. Anyway,we could make a review about Antix. But now, we are going to use kali. It may work on some linux
distro also. Let’s get started
Get a USB flash drive minimum 8GB. You can also use micro sd card if you like.
There are various tools to burn an ISO image on a flash drive. You can do that on linux too. There tools to use, but used Rufus simple and for now effective. There are others good ones out there.
Head over to rufus website (google it) or any other tool you have to burn your ISO image to your flash drive.
When that is done, boot the flash drive on your computer or system. After prompting up, choose kali live, because this is where we would make a persistence file work on
the flash drive.
Open the terminal
- Type fdisk -l (list your drive and identify your flash drive). Since it may be the only flash drive. You may notice it as Disk /dev/sdb: 8GiB or any GB flash drive you have.
- Type fdisk /dev/sdb (To create a persistence partition) Press Enter.Welcome to fdisk would show up
- Type n ( Create new partition) press enter.Using the default, NOTE: Press Enter four times(4X)
- Then type w and press enter. ( If You notice or see partprobe or kpartx type partprobe. if not, just press Enter to continue.
- Type fdisk -l if you created a partition or if /dev/sdb3
if /dev/sdb3 has been created, go to the next step
- Type mkfs.ext4 -L persistence /dev/sdb3 and press Enter
Wait till it’s done
- Type e2label /dev/sdb3 persistence
- mkdir -p /mnt/myusb ( make a dir. Place any name you want in place of myusb)
- mount /dev/sdb3 /mnt/myusb
- echo “/ union” > /mnt/myusb/persistence.conf
- umount /dev/sdb3 && reboot
That’s all. To test it if all went well on kali, just choose or click persistence, make a directory or file and
reboot. After reboot,click on the persistence to find out if your dir or file is still there.
